Astrological Psychology: Back to Basics

One of the easiest and most important things you can do when starting to look at a natal chart, drawn up in the Huber style and vibrant with colours and shapes, is to do simply that - to look. Setting aside and perhaps even temporarily “forgetting” any astrology you already know, or maybe you don't yet know as you're an absolute beginner, the first way into the chart is via the senses, the eyes and the intuition.

Look for an intuitive picture or image, and you can do this by looking at the overall aspect structure which fills the large central area of the chart. In the context of astrological psychology, this area relates to the unconscious motivation of a person. Often the very essence of the person is contained within this area of the chart, and through developing the intuition we can gain a sense of the person simply by looking at this central core of the chart and absorbing and reflecting upon the pictures or images that we see there.

Take a look - is there an image? What about the colours of the aspects? Which area of the chart is filled with aspects? Or are there empty areas? Moon in 7th House

The lyrics are from one of the songs in the then-controversial stage production of "Hair" which was first performed off Broadway in 1967. Wikipedia describes it thus: "The musical's profanity, its depiction of the use of illegal drugs, its treatment of sexuality, its irreverence for the American flag and its nude scene caused controversy.The work broke new ground in musical theatre by defining the genre of "rock musical", using a racially integrated cast, and inviting the audience onstage for a Be-in finale."

 

I saw "Hair" performed on stage in Liverpool in the early 1970s. The songs were great, yes there was nudity, and I went on stage at the end and danced with the cast - a memorable opportunity not to be missed.

 

So, what does all this have to do with the Moon in the 7th House? It's a good line in the song, which anticipates the coming of the Age of Aquarius, but the astrologer in me wonders about the chart the song refers to. Who's chart is it? And where is the location and the time and date of these events? In reality this info would be needed. And having the Moon in 7th House is a reality in astrology; in astrological psychology the Moon in this position brings some interesting life experiences. 

 

The Moon represents our ability to express our emotional responses. When we're in touch with our feelings, we're expressing the energies of the Moon. It's concerned with changes of mood, the ebb, flow and fluidity of our feeling nature. We gain a sense of ourselves through our feelings, most specifically in relation to the people we encounter and the situations we find ourselves in.

Back to the 7th House now - in astrological psychology the 7th House is on the "You" side of the chart, opposite the 1st House, and it's cusp is the DC. It's the area of life experience where we meet others on a one-to-one basis and form friendships and partnerships of all kinds. In the 7th House it's difficult to avoid eyeball-to-eyeball encounters as it's where we meet the world head on....and the world (in the form of those we meet) somehow recognises that here is someone I can talk to, get to know and share some of my problems/life stories/experiences with.

 

Take a break and read here about the 1st and 7th House - the Encounter axis of the chart where  the "I" (me!) meets the "You" (that's the rest of the world around us). This will give you some idea of how the Moon (feelings, emotions, contacts etc) might operate and be expressed in the 7th House.

 

A couple of examples of Moon in 7th House:

 

 

Isolated Moon on the "doorstep" of the chart - likely to be the first thing people pick up on when meeting this person as the Moon is "up for grabs" there and in full view. But note it's in the sign of Aquarius, so is able to keep some detachment if needed - and it's opposite both Pluto and Venus. If Venus kicks in, all may go well; if Pluto kicks in there may be a few surprises in store!

 

 

 

 

Moon in 7th House along with Pluto and Saturn - that's quite a reception committee!    All in Leo, so there's a potential demand to be noticed and recognised, and possibly a challenge to all comers with mixed messages. Moon and Saturn are in aspect to Venus, so there's a dash of a stylish and cultivated flair about this person. But Pluto, note, is aspecting Sun/Mars in Capricorn, so maybe you wouldn't want to push this person too far!

How to interpret a chart for dummies

 Introducing astrological psychology, using The Cosmic Egg Timer as your guide to getting into, and beneath the skin of chart intepretation. 

 One of the most important things we can do when starting to look at a natal chart, drawn up in the Huber style and vibrant with colours and shapes is to do simply that - to look. Setting aside and perhaps even temporarily “forgetting” any astrology you already know, the first way into the chart is via the senses, the eyes and the intuition.

If you cast your mind back to the time when you were a small child, you may remember you had a coal fire in the house where you grew up. Can you remember looking into the embers of the fire and seeing pictures or scenes, faces or figures? 

Similarly, you may have done the same thing when looking at clouds in the sky; perhaps you do it now?  You may see one that first looks like a dog, then it changes and looks more like a dragon, or a mountain range, and so on. Using your eyes, your senses and your imagination, you were perhaps - as a child -  able to see pictures and images, based on the shapes you saw in the clouds or the embers of the fire. Perhaps you can do it still? Give it a go!

Using a similar approach when first looking at a chart, we can train ourselves to look for an intuitive picture or image, and we do this by looking at the overall aspect structure which fills the large central area of the chart. In the context of astrological psychology, this area relates to the unconscious motivation of a person. Often the very essence of the person is contained within this area of the chart, and through developing the intuition we can gain a sense of the person simply by looking at this central core of the chart and absorbing and reflecting upon the pictures or images that we see there.

You can try this out for yourself using a Huber-style chart. Allow yourself to get a sense of what is in the chart. From this a picture or image may emerge. Some of the images budding astrologers see in charts are as diverse as a flower opening, a tent or marquee, a pyramid, a butterfly, a space rocket, an open book, a yacht, a flag - the variety of images is limitless, and is based upon what has been intuitively seen and perceived from the chart. 

You may not see an image or picture, but you may have a strong sense of a predominant colour in the aspect structure, or a sense that everything in the chart is spread out, or squashed, or clinging to one particular area of the chart. If you are unable to see an image or picture, be aware of whether you are picking up something in the chart via your other senses. Trust them. And try it out with this chart. What do you see? Does it remind you of anything? And what might it say about that person?
Astrological psychology emphasises the importance of taking the time to look at a chart before setting off into the realms of deeper and more technical interpretation. This approach is Jupiterian - using your eyes and intuition, take a good look at the chart, taking in the whole picture before moving on to the finer points and details. This is different from a more conventional Mercurial approach to astrological chart interpretation, where facts and detailed information about the chart are considered first and foremost using the logical mind and the overall picture of the chart is not necessarily taken into consideration.

Looking at and absorbing the chart in this way is the first of a series of “foundation stones” or “building blocks” that can be set in place to enable us to find a way into the natal chart. Chart interpretation can be daunting and difficult, especially if there are a mass of other factors to hold in mind all at the same time. But using this Jupiterian approach, where the eyes, the senses and the intuition are engaged first and foremost, we have the ability to begin our exploration of any natal chart in considerable depth, as we start by looking at the very essence and the unconscious motivating energies of the person concerned.

Saturn and the art of self-preservation

This warning sign stopped me in my tracks. It was displayed in Big Bend National Park in Texas. I'd been there before and knew there were mountain lions about - but BEARS too?! That was news to me and my Saturn sub-personality immdiately focussed on safety and self-preservation as I noted all the warnings on the info board and committed them to memory. I wasn't up for taking any chances.

 

I have written about Saturn before - you can read it here -  but this time I want to look at how the qualities of this often-maligned planet can play an essential part in our own self-preservation. We may find ourselves in danger  - meeting a bear or lion or alligator on a path in a national park, we need to know the "rules" of how to manage this. The sign I saw laid these out quite clearly. That was Saturn in care-taking mode with the best interests of public safety involved, along with suggestions of how people could take responsibility for themselves.

"Rules" - there's a Saturnian word to conjure with. Depends which kind of rules they are - the restrictive, controlling "do not" type, or the more benevolent and protective guidelines, encouraging self-awareness and offering choice. You can ignore them (possibly at your peril) or take them on board and be responsible for your own safety.

 

In my co-authored book, The Cosmic Egg Timer, I describe Saturn as "...the planet that swings into action when we need to know exactly where we stand - so to have social structures, guidelines and rules to abide by are all part of Saturn's realm".

Appreciating and nurturing our own Saturnian qualities can be a useful tool in keeping ourselves safe and sussing out situations which might prove a bit dodgy. Of course, there will be more than Saturn involved here if we're using our senses to judge a situation. Eyes and sight (Jupiter) will be involved, as will hearing and sound (Mercury) along with the ability to leg it/the fight-flight response (Mars).

 

As an ego planet, Saturn gives us a physical sense of self, gained through the body, which is composed of various life-supporting systems, such as the skeletal, respiratory, circulatory and digestive systems, to name just a few.

I say in my book that "The psychological drive associated with Saturn is security. Saturn is concerned with structure and form, always seeking to organise, preserve and maintain things within manageable limits.....In astrological psychology we see Saturn in a positive light. It's value should not be underestimated as it plays an essential role in our psychological make up."

Bearing in mind that, like all planets, it can operate at different levels of consciousness, at it's highest level it gives us the ability to act wisely, with dignity and maturity.

Masks - it's a Pluto thing

Since the start of the pandemic in 2020, mask wearing has become a hot and controversial topic. 

Some people are strongly against wearing masks, even though these are known to be the most effective barrier against spreading the Covid-19 virus and its variants. The airborne viral load breathed out or in by we humans is effectively sequestered by the wearing of masks which cover both mouth and nose. Masks protect both the wearer and everyone else they come into contact with. For me it's a no-brainer not to wear one; they're beneficial to all. Otherwise why have medical/surgical staff been wearing them long before the onset of the pandemic? How might a mask-denier feel about a surgeon operating on them without a mask, breathing goodness-knows-what out into the operating theatre and all over them?

So why don't people like them? Is it purely to do with not liking the effect they have on being able to breathe properly or communicate easily? Or is it something to do with people not liking being "told" what to do, maybe thinking they know best? Thinking they look a bit daft or strange wearing them? How vain and anti-social might that be?

In astrology, masks are associated with Pluto, the outermost planet in our solar system, most distant from the Sun, and is associated with the psychological drive of transpersonal will, which is engaged when our energies are directed towards perfecting ourselves and upping our personal ante.

Pluto operates at different levels of awareness. On a personal level it can be seen in disruptive, power-laden behaviour. Pluto is symbolic of the masks we wear to cover up what we don't want others to see. It can make us manipulative, allowing us to force our will on others, trying to dominate them.

Masks can also provide a hiding place for aspects of ourselves we don't want to show or share, to keep safe something hidden about ourselves - think of the smiling face and demeanour which hides a ruthless personality, or a person whose actions belie their true colours.

Masks are not all bad, as long as they are used as masks and not as a hiding place for truth. They can be fun too, but in a superficial way - think of masked balls, dressing up in costumes for a specific role, and make-up which transforms the face of the person beneath. Pluto is the transpersonal planet of tranformation, change and power, things which should definitely be used with awareness and always with the mantra of "do no harm". 

Pluto as a power trip is the expression of this planet at its lowest level; at its highest level of expression personal power has to be surrendered and control relinquished. Those who refuse to wear masks and disapprove of those who do have quite a way to go yet on their path to perfection, which is Pluto at it's highest level: the perfect being. 

That's something we all have to work at, but maybe the mask-deniers have to do it just that little bit harder.

NB - I'm aware that some people have exemptions for wearing masks because they have a medical condition. I know someone in this category who wears an uncomfortable face shield to protect herself and others when she is out, and I take my hat off to her for doing this selflessly.

Bruno Huber - Pioneer of Astrological Psychology

Bruno Huber was born on 29.11.1930 at 12.55 local time in Zurich, Switzerland. I'm going to share something of his chart with readers together with an appreciation of the man and his work.

 
Bruno was a true pioneer in the field of both astrology and psychology, as he blended together the psychosynthesis of Roberto Assagioli, with whom he studied and worked alongside in Florence, with the very best of traditional and conventional astrology, drawing from its basic foundations and roots. With this combination of modern growth and spiritually oriented psychology (psychosynthesis is sometimes known as “the psychology with a soul”) and sound astrological understanding, Bruno created an astrological psychology fit for the 21st century and beyond.

I wrote about Bruno’s chart in my book The Cosmic Egg Timer, saying “Using the senses and intuition as we look at this chart, we may be struck by its strong, upward-reaching appearance. This may be the chart of someone who has high aspirations, who seeks to move upwards in their own individuation process. Blending this with the technical know-how we already may have about working with the chart image, we may see mountains in the overall chart structure, and a series of mountain peaks reaching across the top of the chart. These spring from a pyramid shape which gives a broad and solid base to the image in the central area of the chart. The shaping of the aspect structure as a whole suggests a combination of Fixed motivation (the four-sided “pyramid” figure) and Mutable motivation ( the large triangular shapes).

The triangular shapes dominate and stand out, suggesting more emphasis on a Mutable motivation than one which is Fixed. There is a feeling of quivering, actively sensitive movement in this chart, with the “mountain peaks” at the top hinting at different focal points of interest, ambition, achievement and heights to be scaled, yet always moving upwards from the solid base across in the lower half of the chart. 

 

As well as reflecting the essence of the man, the mountain peaks are reminiscent of his native Switzerland. In reality, Bruno was no stranger to the mountains as he skied and cycled in them. And his life’s work involved intense empirical research into human potential, problems of the human psyche and of the psychological-spiritual development of the individual, using the unique blend of astrology and psychosynthesis which is now known as the Huber Method.”

Mercury, the planet associated with communication, sits at the top of Bruno’s chart, right on the MC (midheaven) and on top of one of the mountain peaks mentioned. He was an excellent communicator and teacher - I always found his talks, lectures and seminars very stimulating. Not only that, he was able to relate directly to his audience - he was a very warm, human being. Mercury is one of the planets in the Dominant Learning triangle in the chart and links with the Jupiter/Pluto conjunction, highlighting Bruno’s transformative perception of astrology and psychology, which he ably communicated to the world via that mountain-peak Mercury. Uranus, the planet associated with research, is strongly placed on the 2nd house cusp, and connects via a blue aspect to the Sun atop another of the mountain peaks. On-going learning, empirical research and the constant exploration of new but well-founded ideas in the areas of astrology and psychology were a significant feature of Bruno’s life and work, and were lifeblood to him.

His untimely death in 1999 means that although he is still missed by those whose lives were touched by him (myself included) he would surely be full of joy to see that his work is being continued, not only  his native Switzerland through the smaller schools and teaching centres for astrological psychology which Bruno envisaged as part of his legacy, but throughout the world.

 

The work of Bruno and Louise Huber, and the story of how they founded this worldwide movement and study of astrological psychology is outlined in a new book, Piercing the Eggshell - The Hubers and their Astrological Psychology, published November 2020.

In the UK the Astrological Psychology Association continues to offer in-depth teaching material - together with the option of having a personal tutor - with the Diploma Study Course available in full colour.

Study Astrological Psychology

Astrological Psychology:The Huber Method is  available from bookshops and on line, and it is THE definitive way to learn about this subject for yourself.

It's based on the Astrological Psychology Association's Diploma Course manuals,  and is presented in a similar A4 full colour format with helpful illustrations and diagrams. It provides a similarly complete course of study, but without the need to do written assignments if these are not your thing. Readers can choose whether or not to do the optional assignments, which are included for those who wish to consolidate what they learn.

Sun, Moon, Saturn - the Ego Planets

How is 2014 going for you so far? Have you set goals, made resolutions, yearn for things to get better for you in the year ahead? Are you leaving it to chance, fate and good luck for the year ahead, or are you willing to engage in making things improve and go your way, on your terms? Here's how you might go about this, using your ego planets.

We identify with our own sense of self through the ego, and in astrological psychology the planets which represent the ego in a natal chart are Sun, Moon and Saturn.  They are always shown in red in the chart because of their significance and importance. Ego planets operate at a more conscious level and large portions of life are lived through them. The qualities, drives and energies that these three planets represent are closely linked with the physical, emotional and mental aspects of what it is to be human.

Saturn provides structure and gives a sense of the physical self.

Moon conveys our emotional responses and gives a sense of self via feelings.

Sun allows us to connect with the will, the ability to make choices and gain self awareness through the use of the mind.

All three planets can be functioning a various stages of consciousness - are they asleep, waking or awake? Are you using them to the best of your ability to gain the most you can from your daily interactions and relationships? If you're interested in your own personal growth, and want to get the best you can out of life, you can learn to wake these planets up so they are working more effectively for you.

Engaging with the Cardinal energy of the Sun you can begin to tap into your ability to be creative; connecting with the Mutable energy of the Moon you can become more comfortable and proficient at expressing your feelings and learning to ask for your emotional needs to be recognised and met in relationships; and with Saturn's Fixed energy you can pursue your security needs alongside becoming more structured and organised in your life.

In the UK the Astrological Psychology Association continues to offer in-depth teaching material - together with the option of having a personal tutor - with the Diploma Study Course available in full colour.

 

In Spain the Spanish Huber School offers on-line tuition.

 

The books written by Bruno and Louise are  available in English from the APA Book Shop, so Bruno’s work and the work of the Huber’s continues to be there for students of astrological psychology worldwide.
